Uncle Henry´s Universe.

About the blog

I have no heavy training... Barely Elementary School. Preferred the wilderness, it became my university, but I got muddy boots and experience instead of School knowledge so my English was therefore quite inadequate. This blog is a project to improve my skills in English language.

We all have our own universe, welcome to visit mine.

Gambian Sun Squirrel

Travel Posted on Thu, April 12, 2012 13:34

Gambian Sun Squirrel, Heliosciurus gambianus.

The Gambia = Superb bird life and a nice little squirrel. Long walk at dawn, the first day. The wife and I, and a bag with the digital camera and a leaky water bottle… We have no pictures from The Gambia!

From our balcony we got acquainted with a large tree and all those who ate of the fruits there. The sun squirrel was one of them. A nice buddy that we captured with the camcorder.

Malabar Giant Squirrel

Malabar Giant Squirrel (Indian Giant Squirrel), Ratufa indica.

The squirrels monster! A meter-long (including tail) and with a weight of two kilograms. An unforgettable meeting in a magical place. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Thekkadi, Western Ghats. With a male of Asian paradise flycatcher playing beside us, rustling leaves after elusive reptiles, exciting jungle and the native guide´s stories about encounters with tigers, on the same path as where we stand!

Three-striped Palm Squirrel

Travel Posted on Thu, April 12, 2012 13:23

Three-striped Palm Squirrel (Indian Palm Squirrel), Funambulus palmarum.

A common and loud little squirrel. It calls with a repeated, scolding trill that can easily be mistaken for a bird.

And old Hindu legend explains how the squirrel received the 3 stripes across its back. The Adi sethu bridge was being constructed at Rameswaram by Lord Rama and the Vanara Sena, and the squirrel played its part by rolling in beach sand, then running to the bridge to shake the sand from its back, all the time chanting Lord Rama´s name. Lord Rama was pleased by the creature´s dedication and, in stroking the squirrels back, the marks of Rama´s fingers were left on the squirrel ever since. The legend of Lord Rama and the squirrel started in Tamil Nadu and they are mentioned in one of the hymns of the Alvars. This is probably the reason that squirrels are considered sacred in India.

Eurasian Red Squirrel

Travel Posted on Wed, April 11, 2012 17:05

Eurasian Red Squirrel, Sciurus vulgaris.

It was not until January as the first squirrel showed up at the bird table this year. A week later came another, then another until they were five! Where did they come from? They are truly welcoming guests, and very entertaining.

A few years ago we were hit by a notorious strawberry thief! The red berries resolved despite protective nets. Caught in the act, we found an adorable cute baby squirrel. It was obviously forgiven 🙂

Backlash!

PG / PPG Posted on Tue, April 10, 2012 18:17

Typical April weather, 15 cm wet snow in the morning and heavy rain during the day. Wonderful! 🙂

Röjdälven, near our homestead.

No work today!

Browsing the Internet and find some fun around paragliding. Okay, attached link is two years old but I have not seen it before. I think it’s funny, hilarious, especially if one remembers their first steps as a beginner. Run into the wind! Run … Run … And if you think you understand how curious cows are thinking, it gets even better!

Eagle inventory 1 april.

Took some friends out this weekend, to show the fascination with eagle inventory, but I’m not sure if they understand me… Mumbled something about April 1 joke!

First kayaking this year!

Kayak Posted on Fri, March 30, 2012 17:26

At last! First kayaking this year. A rather cold morning, windy and a few degrees below zero but absolutely wonderful. Birdsong, mostly chaffinch. Some Canadian geese, lapwings and cranes. Saw two pairs of teals, first ones this spring.

Began with Röjdälven (Grubbed river?), downstream, good speed on the water. There are traces of beavers everywhere. A stunning rat and a big modifier of the landscape.

Then a small river named Hasslan. Calm and peaceful. Perfect start to the day, especially when the afternoon consists of working with a bellowing chainsaw.

Upstream, the lake Kläggen. Here you have to lift your kayak past the floodgates.

Be careful!

Fist on the table!

I wonder Posted on Fri, March 23, 2012 17:46

The organizations ” Fist on the table” and people campaign for new predator policy have meetings around the country tomorrow. They consider themselves to live under a terrorist threat from all predators! (Their own words…) Their whole existence is threatened. Livestocks, open landscapes, basic security, industry, recreation and so on.

I think they’re exaggerating a bit …

I live in the countryside which is considered wolf densest in the country. I spend about 250 days per year in the woods and have absolutely no problem whatsoever with predators! They have not even tasted me… yet.

We live in a strange time! Both high-tech and predator fear. I remember the book nineteen eighty-four with a shudder and think that Facebook is much scarier than the wildlife we lived with for thousands of years!
